FBI Warns of AI-Powered Election Scams Ahead of 2026 Midterms
With the 2026 U.S. midterm elections three weeks away, the FBI has issued a warning about fraudsters exploiting candidate identities to steal money and personal data. Scammers are impersonating political campaigns, using AI-generated voices, images, and messages to create convincing fake solicitations for donations, undelivered merchandise, or voter registration schemes designed to harvest personally identifiable information (PII).
The bureau highlighted schemes where victims are promised financial returns on "investments" in campaign pools, only to lose funds or have their data compromised. In one tactic, fraudsters send texts or emails falsely claiming recipients aren’t registered to vote, directing them to fake state voter registration pages to steal PII. The FBI emphasized that campaign donations are not investments and carry no financial return.
AI has made these scams harder to detect, as cloned voices and polished messages now appear nearly indistinguishable from legitimate communications. The alert follows a similar warning issued before the 2024 general election, underscoring the persistent threat of election-related fraud.
Meanwhile, social media platform X announced the removal of over 13,000 accounts tied to foreign influence operations linked to Iran, Russia, and China. These networks targeted U.S. political discourse, amplifying divisive content about candidates and public figures. X encourages users to report misleading posts under its "Civic Integrity" feature, which may trigger Community Notes or labels for rule-breaking content.
The UK has also taken steps to counter disinformation, announcing plans for a National Centre for Information Defence to combat state-backed information attacks. Prime Minister Andy Burnham accused Russia of deploying bots, fake websites, and forged branding including impersonating 28 British organizations to spread disinformation.
