Cyberattack Targets 10 Uttarakhand Government Websites, Services Restored Within Hours

A malware attack disrupted the websites of 10 Uttarakhand government departments on August 2, including the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, forcing authorities to take them offline temporarily. The affected agencies also included the Public Works Department (PWD), Food and Civil Supplies Department, Uttarakhand Renewable Energy Development Agency (UREDA), State Tax Department, ESIC, Transport Department, and Tourism Department.

The Information Technology Development Agency (ITDA) responded swiftly, isolating the compromised sites and restoring services within hours using secure backups stored at the state data center. ITDA Director Alok Pandey confirmed that the attack was contained quickly, with no major data loss reported.

This incident follows Uttarakhand’s October 2024 cyberattack, which crippled nearly 90 government websites, including the Chief Minister’s Helpline, for several days. Officials credited enhanced cybersecurity measures implemented after the 2024 breach for limiting the impact of Saturday’s attack, preventing broader disruption.

The state’s cybersecurity team continues to monitor the situation as investigations proceed.
