Federal Court Dismisses Majority of Data Breach Lawsuit Against Eckerd Connects

A federal court in Florida has dismissed key claims in a proposed class-action lawsuit against Eckerd Connects (operating as Eckerd Youth Alternatives), a nonprofit focused on workforce development. Judge Steven D. Merryday of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida ruled on Thursday that Collins’ claims of unjust enrichment and breach of confidence lacked legal merit. The court found that the routine exchange of personal data did not confer a tangible benefit to Eckerd Connects, undermining the unjust enrichment argument. Additionally, the judge noted that Eckerd itself was not the entity that disclosed the data, further weakening the case.

While the dismissal significantly narrows the lawsuit, the ruling does not entirely absolve Eckerd Connects of liability.
