Romanian State Websites

Over the weekend of Romania’s presidential election rerun, pro-Russian hacktivist group NoName057(16) launched a distributed denial-of-service campaign against numerous Romanian state domains, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Constitutional Court. The sustained flood of traffic rendered key election-related portals inaccessible for several hours, temporarily preventing citizens from accessing official voter information, election schedules, and legal rulings. Although no sensitive data was compromised or exfiltrated, the attack disrupted the online delivery of government services at a critical democratic juncture, risking confusion among voters and undermining public confidence in the electoral process. The Romanian National Directorate for Cyber Security intervened swiftly to restore availability, deploying traffic-rerouting techniques and collaborating with hosting providers to reestablish normal operations. While all affected sites are now back online, the incident highlighted vulnerabilities in the nation’s cyber-infrastructure and exposed the potential for further politically motivated campaigns to interfere with democratic institutions and essential public services.
