**Deschutes Public Library System Hit by Cyberattack, Forcing Temporary Closures**
The Deschutes Public Library system in Oregon experienced a cybersecurity breach on Friday, prompting an immediate shutdown of its physical branches and many online services. The attack targeted the library’s communications department, where press releases, photos, and videos are stored, though officials believe customer records remain unaffected.
Library director Todd Dunkelberg stated that security software detected the breach early, but the full extent of the incident is still under investigation. Hackers appear to have accessed files on older servers, leading the library to take precautionary measures, including blocking all network traffic to prevent further exposure.
As a result, all library branches—including locations in Bend, Redmond, La Pine, Sunriver, and Sisters—will remain closed through the weekend. Redmond and Bend are expected to reopen on Monday, while the other branches will resume operations on Tuesday. During the closure, patrons will be unable to check out or return physical materials, access Wi-Fi, or use online catalog services. However, digital resources, including eBooks and audiobooks, remain available through the Libby app and the library’s Bibliocommons platform.
An external cybersecurity firm has been brought in to investigate the breach and strengthen the library’s digital defenses. Book drops at all locations will also remain closed until further notice.
