**Coupang CEO Resigns Following Massive Data Breach Affecting Over Half of South Korea**
Coupang CEO Park Dae-jun resigned on 10 December, taking responsibility for a 18 November data breach that exposed the personal information of over half of South Korea’s population—one of the country’s most severe cybersecurity incidents in 2025.
In a public statement, Dae-jun expressed regret, acknowledging his accountability for the breach and its aftermath. Coupang issued an apology, pledging to strengthen security measures and rebuild customer trust. Harold Rogers, chief administrative officer of Coupang’s U.S. parent company, will serve as interim CEO while a permanent successor is identified.
The breach compromised sensitive data, including customer names, email addresses, phone numbers, shipping addresses, and order histories. However, credit card details and login credentials were not affected. Coupang has not yet disclosed the cause of the incident.
The South Korean e-commerce giant, which operates Rocket Delivery, Rocket Fresh, and Coupang Eats, acquired luxury retailer Farfetch in December 2023, preventing its potential collapse. The breach adds to growing scrutiny over data protection in the region.
