$6 Million Settlement Reached in 2024 Life Insurance Data Breach Affecting Thousands
A $6 million settlement has been finalized for thousands of Americans impacted by a data breach involving six life insurance companies and their third-party administrator, Landmark Admin. The breach, which occurred between May 13 and June 17, 2024, exposed sensitive personal information, including Social Security numbers, financial details, and health insurance data.
The companies named in the settlement are American Benefit Life Insurance Company, American Monumental Life Insurance Company, Capitol Life Insurance Company, Continental Mutual Insurance Company, Liberty Bankers Life Insurance Company, and Accendo Insurance Company. Plaintiffs in the class-action lawsuit alleged that Landmark Admin failed to implement reasonable cybersecurity measures, allowing the breach to occur. While the defendants denied wrongdoing, they agreed to the settlement to resolve the claims.
Affected customers have until December 26, 2025, to file a claim. Those who can prove out-of-pocket losses—such as fraud or identity theft—may receive up to $2,500 in compensation. Individuals without documented financial harm are eligible for up to $30, though payouts may be reduced based on the number of claimants.
This settlement follows a similar case involving Integris Health, an Oklahoma-based healthcare group that agreed to a $30 million payout in 2023 after a November 2023 breach exposed patient data. In that case, affected individuals also received three years of free credit monitoring and $1 million in identity theft insurance.
