Comparitech: Healthcare Ransomware Attacks Doubled Since This Time Last Year

Ransomware Attacks on Healthcare Sector Surge in Q3 2026

In the third quarter of 2026, ransomware attacks against the healthcare sector hit a record high, averaging 3.33 incidents per day more than double the volume from the same period in 2025. Research by Comparitech reveals that healthcare remains a prime target for cybercriminals due to its lucrative potential, with attacks causing catastrophic disruptions and exposing highly sensitive patient data.

Rebecca Moody, Head of Data Research at Comparitech, attributes the surge to healthcare’s vulnerability and the high-value datasets it holds. Recent breaches, including three in quick succession last month, have raised alarms among security experts, with some describing the trend as an "alarming escalation."

James Maude, Field CTO at BeyondTrust, highlights that healthcare has historically lagged in cybersecurity preparedness, with nearly a third of breaches involving third-party compromises. He emphasizes the need for proactive measures, including identity and access security, to reduce attack surfaces before breaches occur.

Both Moody and Maude stress the importance of cyber hygiene basics such as frequent backups, patching vulnerabilities, and employee training to mitigate risks. Moody also warns that organizations should assume the worst during incidents, noting that some healthcare entities initially downplayed breaches only to later confirm data theft.

As ransomware tactics evolve, hospitals face growing pressure to strengthen defenses to protect both patient data and critical operations.
