Colonial Pipeline

Colonial Pipeline

In May 2021, the Colonial Pipeline, which is a major fuel pipeline running from Texas to New Jersey, experienced a significant ransomware attack by a hacker group known as DarkSide. This cyberattack led to the shutdown of the 5,500-mile pipeline responsible for carrying 2.5 million barrels of fuel per day, nearly 45% of the East Coast's supply of diesel, petrol, and jet fuel. The disruption caused widespread fuel shortages, panic buying, and increased fuel prices across the affected regions. The Colonial Pipeline Company had to pay a ransom of $4.4 million to the hacker group to regain access to their systems. This incident highlighted the vulnerabilities of critical infrastructure to cyberattacks and raised questions about cybersecurity practices and resilience in the face of increasing threats from ransomware attacks.
