Cloudflare and PHP: A critical PHP vulnerability may take websites down today

Critical PHP Vulnerabilities Patched in Urgent Security Update

PHP developers are releasing emergency security patches today to address two critical vulnerabilities rated 9.2/10 in severity. The flaws, identified as remote code execution (RCE) exploits, affect all PHP versions from 5.x onward, potentially allowing attackers to execute malicious code on vulnerable servers. Successful exploitation could lead to website defacement, data theft, or full system compromise.

The patches are scheduled for release at 10 AM ET, though developers may expedite the update if exploit details leak or active attacks are detected. Security firm watchTowr warns that the vulnerabilities impact an estimated 1.3 million internet-connected hosts, while Wordfence highlights that all WordPress sites which power over 40% of the web are at risk, as they rely on PHP. Notably, the fix cannot be applied via automatic updates, requiring manual intervention from site administrators.

Cybersecurity agencies, including the EU’s CERT and the UK’s NCSC, have advised organizations unable to patch immediately to isolate internet-facing applications or take them offline. GrapheneOS has already taken its user forum offline as a precaution, citing the rapid development of proof-of-concept exploits. PHP developer Gina Peter Banyard emphasized that patching is the only mitigation, with server shutdowns recommended as a last resort.

Threat researchers at Sansec predict mass attacks within 15 minutes of the patch release, while Cloudflare reports early exploitation attempts against its PHP-based infrastructure. The company has implemented temporary firewall rules as a stopgap until the official fix is deployed.
