Discourse: Discourse ImageMagick Vulnerability Enables Arbitrary File Read Through Malicious Image Uploads

Critical Discourse Vulnerability (CVE-2026-55420) Exposed Server File Read/Write Risks

Security researchers uncovered a severe vulnerability in Discourse (CVE-2026-55420), allowing low-privileged users to read and write files on the underlying server by exploiting flaws in the platform’s ImageMagick-based upload pipeline. The issue was patched for hosted customers in June 2026 and publicly disclosed on June 30, 2026.

The flaw affects default Discourse deployments using Docker, requiring only a Trust Level 0 account the platform’s lowest privilege tier. Attackers could craft malicious image uploads to trigger a time-of-check-to-time-of-use (TOCTOU) race condition, enabling access to sensitive server files.

Exploitation Chain

Research by Kevin Gervot of Searchlight Cyber revealed unsafe interactions between Discourse’s upload validation, ImageMagick, Ghostscript, FastImage, and temporary file handling. The attack leveraged:

  • Polyglot files combining JPEG XL structures with PostScript content, bypassing initial checks.
  • ImageMagick’s MSL (Magick Scripting Language) to read/write files via crafted SVG triggers.
  • Race conditions prolonged by jpegoptim delays, allowing temporary file substitution.

The exploit could extract files like /etc/passwd, embed them in an image, and return them via a Discourse upload URL eliminating the need for attackers to know the server’s filesystem layout.

Impact & Mitigation

While the demonstrated attack focused on arbitrary file read/write, researchers warned that Rails secrets or environment data could enable further privilege escalation. Discourse mitigated the issue by:

  • Implementing a default-deny security policy for ImageMagick, blocking unsafe delegates (e.g., Ghostscript).
  • Restricting allowed coders to only those required by Discourse.

Administrators were advised to update Discourse, verify ImageMagick policies, and monitor for suspicious uploads (e.g., mismatched extensions, unusual JXL/PDF traits). The incident underscores risks in file-upload pipelines relying on extensions or format conversion alone, particularly when parsers like Ghostscript expand the attack surface.
