City of Oakley and City of Pleasant Hill: 2 Contra Costa Co. cities still recovering after being hit by cyberattacks

Cyberattacks Disrupt Two Contra Costa County Cities

Two cities in Contra Costa County, California Oakley and Pleasant Hill are recovering from cyberattacks that struck last Thursday. The incidents targeted municipal computer systems, prompting Oakley to declare a local emergency in response.

In Pleasant Hill, the police department confirmed the attack directly impacted the city’s infrastructure. While some departments have resumed near-normal operations, others remain affected as officials conduct forensic audits to assess the breach. Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia noted that systems are being restored gradually to prevent further security risks.

Cybersecurity expert Sai Huda, CEO of Cybercatch, stated that such attacks are often financially motivated, with threat actors locking down data and demanding ransom payments. Smaller governments are increasingly targeted due to the high-value data they hold, including Social Security numbers and driver’s license information.

Contra Costa County officials acknowledged ongoing efforts to strengthen cybersecurity measures, though the recent attacks highlight persistent vulnerabilities. The incidents follow last year’s major ransomware attack on Oakland, which caused prolonged disruptions.
