City of Newark

Newark City Hall computers were hacked with ransomware in April 2017.

The paper demonstrates that RSA-2048 encryption, which encrypts computer data including Word and Excel files, picture files, and practically any other form of a file that runs on a desktop computer, was present on city computers.

City's computers can be quickly accessed by paying for an electronic key using bitcoin, an anonymous, global form of electronic payment.

The ransom demand from the hacker was 24 Bitcoin, or around $30,000.
