Cedar Crest College Hit by Ransomware Attack, Sensitive Data Potentially Exposed

Cedar Crest College, a private liberal arts institution in Allentown, Pennsylvania, confirmed a cybersecurity incident on July 13, 2026, after detecting unauthorized access to its systems. The breach affected multiple platforms, including FalconLink, FalconApp, campus network drives, and OneDrive file-sharing systems.

Shortly after discovery, the ransomware group NightSpire claimed responsibility, announcing on the dark web that it had exfiltrated data from the college and threatened to publish it. While Cedar Crest College acknowledged that some information may have been compromised, the full extent of the exposed data remains under investigation.

The college, founded in 1867 and historically a women’s institution before expanding to coeducational programs, has stated it is working to assess the impact and will provide updates as more details emerge.

Legal firm Shamis & Gentile P.A. is investigating the breach, noting that affected individuals may be eligible for compensation due to the potential exposure of sensitive personally identifiable information (PII). The firm is reviewing options for those impacted to pursue claims.
