Global Ransomware Attacks Surge in August 2026, Hitting Over 1,000 Organizations
In August 2026, ransomware attacks reached a new peak for the year, with 1,073 organizations worldwide falling victim marking a 12% increase from July’s 973 incidents. The findings, detailed in NCC Group’s Cyber Threat Intelligence Report published on September 23, highlight a sharp rise in cyber extortion campaigns.
Regional and Sector Impact
North America bore the brunt of the attacks, accounting for 44% of incidents, followed by Europe (26%) and Asia (13%). South America, Africa, and Oceania saw 6%, 2%, and 2% of attacks, respectively.
The industrial sector was the hardest hit, representing 31% of all reported incidents, while consumer goods and services (18%), healthcare (12%), IT (11%), and financial services (6%) also faced significant disruptions. Notable breaches included a cyberattack on Boston Dynamics and a data theft incident at Manchester Airport Group, underscoring a shift among some threat actors toward pure data extortion over traditional encryption-based ransomware.
Key Threat Actors
Among attacks linked to known groups, Qilin led with 164 incidents, followed by The Gentlemen (116) two of the most active ransomware operators in 2026. Other prominent groups included Clop (89), Dire Wolf (43), and INC Ransom (43).
Driving Factors Behind the Surge
NCC Group’s Matt Hull, VP of cyber intelligence and response, attributed the rise to advancements in AI and geopolitical instability, which have amplified both criminal and state-sponsored threats. The report noted that August marked the second consecutive month of record-high ransomware activity, signaling a sustained escalation in global cyber threats.
