Bitdefender: Study finds most Businesses ask Employees to conceal Data Breaches

Organizations Still Concealing Data Breaches Despite Legal and Security Risks, Study Finds

A recent study by cybersecurity firm Bitdefender reveals that many organizations continue to suppress or delay reporting data breaches, despite legal obligations and expert recommendations for transparency. The research, which surveyed cybersecurity professionals, found that a significant number had been instructed by employers to conceal incidents practices that hinder investigations, prolong attacker access, and amplify financial and reputational damage.

The report also underscores growing concerns about AI’s role in cyber threats. While AI enhances defensive capabilities, security professionals warn that cybercriminals are exploiting the technology more effectively, using it to automate phishing, craft convincing social engineering attacks, and identify vulnerabilities at scale. As AI-driven threats evolve, detection and mitigation are expected to become increasingly difficult.

Another critical issue highlighted is the communication breakdown between business leaders and cybersecurity teams. Over half of surveyed employees reported being discouraged from discussing breaches internally, fostering a culture of silence that weakens incident response. Delayed reporting allows attackers more time to escalate access and inflict further harm.

The study further confirms that cyberattacks remain a pervasive threat, with over half of respondents experiencing frequent attempts in the past year. Common attack vectors included business email compromise (BEC), unauthorized cloud access, and ransomware all of which disrupted operations across industries.

The findings emphasize that transparency, open internal communication, and rapid breach disclosure are essential to strengthening cyber resilience. As attackers leverage AI and other advanced tools, organizations that prioritize proactive reporting and response may better mitigate the impact of future threats.
