Massive Alleged Cyber Breach Targets Chinese State-Run Supercomputing System
A suspected cyber actor, operating under the name FlamingChina, is reportedly behind one of the most significant data breaches in recent history, allegedly infiltrating China’s National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin and exfiltrating over 10 petabytes of sensitive national security data. The breach, which went undetected for months, is said to involve classified research tied to aerospace engineering, military systems, bioinformatics, and fusion simulations.
The National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin, a critical infrastructure hub supporting over 6,000 institutional users including defense and scientific research entities was established in 2009 as China’s first major supercomputing facility. The leaked data, first surfaced on Telegram on February 6, includes technical schematics, advanced simulations, and documents marked with Chinese "secret" classifications. Among the alleged targets are prominent institutions such as the Aviation Industry Corporation of China, the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, and the National University of Defense Technology.
Cybersecurity experts, including Dakota Cary of SentinelOne, who reviewed samples of the leaked material, confirmed that the files align with outputs expected from a high-performance computing environment. The group is reportedly selling limited previews of the dataset for thousands of dollars, with full access priced in the hundreds of thousands, using cryptocurrency for transactions.
While the origin and full scope of the dataset remain unverified, multiple analysts have noted its consistency with legitimate supercomputing outputs. Chinese authorities have yet to officially confirm the breach, and the incident remains under investigation. The National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin is part of a broader network of facilities supporting China’s advancements in AI, aerospace, and military technology.
