The Auckland University of Technology has allegedly been hacked by a ransomware group known as Monti, which has allegedly stolen 60 gigabytes of data that it is threatening to publish publicly.
The institution said in a statement that there had been little disturbance to its services and that regular operations and instruction were continuing both on campus and online.
In the hours following initial detection, AUT adopted additional security measures in addition to taking urgent action to confine and isolate any impacted servers.
Leading outside forensic IT and cyber-security professionals have been hired to help manage the problem and carry out a full investigation.
