AT&T Data Breach Settlement: Deadline Approaches for $177 Million Payout
AT&T has agreed to a $177 million class action settlement following two major data breaches in 2024, with the deadline for eligible customers to file claims set for December 18, 2024. The settlement resolves lawsuits alleging the company failed to protect customer data, though AT&T denies wrongdoing, stating it settled to avoid prolonged litigation.
The first breach, disclosed on March 30, 2024, exposed sensitive customer data—including Social Security numbers, addresses, and passcodes—on the dark web. The second incident, announced on July 12, 2024, involved the illegal download of call and text records. The breaches impacted over 7 million current AT&T customers and more than 65 million former account holders (2019–2024).
Eligible claimants fall into two settlement classes:
- March 30 breach victims – Can receive up to $5,000 for documented losses or tiered cash payments (higher for those whose Social Security numbers were exposed).
- July 12 breach victims – Eligible for up to $2,500 for documented losses or a share of remaining settlement funds after costs.
Customers affected by both breaches may receive up to $7,500. Claims can be filed online at telecomdatasettlement.com or mailed to the settlement administrator. Uncertain customers can verify eligibility by calling 1-833-890-4930. The original November 18 deadline was extended by the court.
