Four-Year-Old Arm Mali GPU Flaw Roots Amazon Fire TV Cube, Patch Status Unclear
A four-year-old vulnerability in Arm’s Mali GPU driver (CVE-2022-38181) has been adapted to gain root access on the third-generation Amazon Fire TV Cube, enabling users to bypass Amazon’s software restrictions and install alternative operating systems. The high-severity use-after-free flaw, first disclosed in 2022, allows attackers to manipulate kernel memory and escalate privileges by exploiting memory freed while still in use.
Security researcher Man Yue Mo originally demonstrated the exploit on a Google Pixel 6 in July 2022, showing how an unprivileged Android process could execute kernel-level code. Arm released a patch in October 2022 (driver version r40p0), but it remains uncertain whether Amazon integrated the fix into the Fire TV Cube, which launched later that month.
A developer later adapted the exploit for FireOS’s 32-bit environment, enabling users to install tools like Magisk, replace the stock recovery system, and load alternative OS options such as CoreELEC (for media playback) and EmuELEC (for retro gaming). While the modification appeals to home theater enthusiasts seeking greater control over media quality, Amazon stated that the exploit requires physical access and a multi-step process, posing minimal risk to most users.
Amazon has not confirmed whether the Fire TV Cube includes the patch, leaving the device’s security status unclear. The exploit does not appear to be actively exploited in the wild, but unpatched systems could be vulnerable to further malicious activity if root access is abused.
