Albanian Parliament Hit by Sophisticated Cyberattack Linked to Iran-Backed Group
Albania’s parliament disclosed a cyberattack late Tuesday, describing it as a "sophisticated" operation targeting data deletion and internal systems. While the parliament’s main systems and official website remained operational, the attack temporarily disabled internal email services, disrupting communications for lawmakers and staff for several hours.
The hacker group Homeland Justice claimed responsibility, alleging it had accessed internal parliamentary communications and posting purported leaked documents on its Telegram channel. Albanian authorities have not confirmed the group’s claims, and investigations by national cybersecurity agencies are ongoing.
Homeland Justice has been previously linked by security researchers and Western officials to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The group has a history of targeting Albanian institutions, including prior attacks on parliament, the national airline, telecommunications firms, and the national statistics agency.
The latest attack occurs amid escalating tensions between Albania and Iran, with Homeland Justice citing Albania’s hosting of the Iranian opposition group Mujahedeen-e-Khalq (MEK) in Durrës as the motive. The group’s statement followed recent declarations by MEK leader Maryam Rajavi announcing plans for a provisional government to challenge Iran’s leadership. The incident also coincides with broader regional security concerns following U.S. and Israeli military actions against Tehran.
