Abri Credit Union Data Breach Exposes Sensitive Member Information
In May 2024, Abri Credit Union—a not-for-profit financial cooperative based in Romeoville, Illinois—suffered a data breach involving unauthorized access to its network. The intrusion occurred between May 3 and May 4, 2024, but was not discovered until December 1, 2025, following a forensic investigation with external cybersecurity experts.
The breach exposed sensitive personal data, including full names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, credit/debit card details, and financial account information. According to filings with the Massachusetts Attorney General, at least 463 residents of the state were affected. Abri Credit Union, which serves over 27,000 members and manages more than $400 million in assets, notified impacted individuals, warning of potential risks such as identity theft and financial fraud.
As part of its response, Abri offered affected members complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection services through Experian IdentityWorks. The law firm Shamis & Gentile P.A. is investigating the incident, noting that those impacted may be eligible for compensation. The breach highlights ongoing vulnerabilities in financial institutions’ data security measures.
