1-Grid Hit by Large-Scale DDoS Attack Disrupting Services in South Africa
South Africa-based web hosting provider 1-Grid recently suffered a large-scale distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack, causing intermittent service disruptions across its infrastructure. The company, which rebranded from Gridhost in 2018, serves over 32,000 customers and hosts more than 77,000 websites, primarily catering to small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Its services include domain registration, web hosting, website builders, business email, and SSL certificates.
In an initial status update, 1-Grid confirmed the attack, stating that its technical teams and upstream partners were working to mitigate the disruption and restore stability. A DDoS attack involves flooding a target with traffic from multiple compromised devices often a botnet of hacked computers, servers, or IoT devices to overwhelm systems, making them slow or unavailable to legitimate users. Such attacks are commonly used for disruption, extortion, or financial and reputational damage, with frequent targets including websites, online banking platforms, and government services.
1-Grid later announced that the attack had been successfully mitigated, with full network functionality restored. Website and email services are now operating normally, and the company continues to monitor systems and implement additional protective measures. No customer action was required, and 1-Grid emphasized its commitment to maintaining service reliability and availability.
